Blues Master Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton at Chandler 3/7
Join us at Chandler Saturday March 7th at 7PM, as two of the most gifted practitioners of pre-war American roots music — Jerron Paxton and Dennis Lichtman — will share the stage for an evening of blues, ragtime, jazz, old-time, and swing woven together with storytelling, and humor.
The Wall Street Journal called Jerron Paxton "virtually the only music-maker of his generation to fully assimilate the blues idiom of the 1920s and '30s." NPR's Fresh Air described his music as "vibrant, exciting and new — even if it sounds like it could have been found on a scratchy record from the 1920s." Paxton commands an almost absurd breadth of instruments: guitar, banjo, piano, fiddle, harmonica, Cajun accordion, and is also a highly regarded vocalist. His comparisons range from Robert Johnson to Taj Mahal — but Paxton is a true original.
Dennis Lichtman is the man the Wall Street Journal credited as running "ground zero for an emerging late-night scene of young swing and traditional jazz players." Since 2007, Lichtman has led the legendary Tuesday night jazz jam session at Mona's Bar in New York's East Village — a weekly institution profiled by the New York Times that has become a crucial breeding ground for the early jazz revival. His compositions have been featured on HBO's The Plot Against America and Succession, and he has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Good Morning America.
He and Paxton have been musical collaborators and friends for years, releasing a duo album together that showcases the two virtuosos with encyclopedic knowledge of American roots music.
Tickets are available at chandler-arts.org, by calling 802-728-9878, or at the door. Sliding scale pricing for adults, with Students tickets for just $10, and kids 12 & under free.
